Where the old style Dictaphones would tape your diction for you, the new digital voice recorders have an internal memory that can be down loaded to a PC or Mac. With the ability to store far more audio than the old tape style, the digital voice recorder has great advantages.

The traditional use of a voice recorder would be to dictate letters and notes and these functions remain much the same. Because digital voice recorders have far more capacity you can use them to record whole lectures or meetings. You can even use software to convert your audio message to text once downloaded onto your PC.

It is important to make sure your voice recorder is the one for you. You need to have some idea of how many hours you might need to record for. If your primary use is to record lectures and meetings, you will need a voice recorder with enough memory and battery power to keep going for a long session. Some voice recorders come with a long play option, although as you would expect you might lose some quality in the long play setting.

The voice recorder needs to be able to be downloaded to your PC or Mac via a USB cable. This allows you to transfer the recordings and keep them on CD or archive them on your PC.

Some voice recorder are compatible with voice to text software and this may well be an excellent option for you. You would practically be able to do your secretary's job for her.

Other software that is available are those which allow you to transfer recordings direct to e-mail. This would be an invaluable tool for doctors, lawyers, reporters and any one who needs large amounts of voice recordings.

Voice Recorders come in a wide price range that reflects the amount of memory and compatibility to software. Some voice recorders even have an MP3 option as well so can give you dual purpose.
